ways to give

Contributions from our community are needed for CFS to maintain the level of expert, individualized, comprehensive and compassionate support the individuals we work with deserve. Government reimbursements are inadequate for CFS to deliver person-centered support to over 1,000 individuals, to maintain all of our residences and facilities, and to continue, expand, and innovate programs that enable individuals to flourish in their communities while providing support and peace of mind to their families.

Contributions to CFS:

Support the Innovation and Advocacy Department

Support the Innovation and Advocacy Department, which is not directly reimbursed by government but is essential to our work. Innovation and Advocacy staff work to create programs and initiatives that empower individuals to become better self-advocates and grow their social networks, and create personal outcomes goals directly with individuals and their support teams.

Provide much needed support for our DSP workforce

Provide much needed support for our DSP workforce, who themselves need health, emotional, and financial support. Their jobs are extremely demanding and made more difficult by the fact that many of the individuals we serve have experienced trauma and have complex behavioral and medical needs. Ensuring the needs of our DSPs are met also means less turnover, greater retention, and in the end, better support for the individuals we work with.

Support innovative technology like Home Enabling Supports

Support innovative technology like Home Enabling Supports that allow individuals to live more independently while maintaining their safety. Currently, CFS is working with partners to pilot remote DSPs in our residential programs and support young people living in community settings with smart-home and wearable technology.

Maintain, upgrade, and beautify our small group residences

Maintain, upgrade, and beautify our small group residences with renovations to make the homes more accessible, modern, and full of plant life. Our reimbursement rates – especially in New Jersey – don’t support home up-keep, such as new windows, kitchens, or roofs. Additionally, many of our individuals living in our group homes have lived in their neighborhoods for decades and want to age in place, which will require renovations for wheelchair access or to address other aging challenges. Finally, our 50+ homes could always use a beautification campaign, especially in the spring when it’s time to plant new gardens, which the participants love.

Provide our NJ Day Program with needed equipment and services

Provide our New Jersey Day Programs with the equipment they need in their sensory and resource rooms. Support can also provide therapeutic and recreational services like pet therapy, massage therapy, yoga classes, dance and music classes, and access to sensory and motor experts.

Advance vital programs that support aging parents and underserved communities

Advance vital programs that support aging parents and underserved communities, especially in self-direction. We’re working with experts from Columbia University and families to provide targeted assistance to families who need additional help due to aging or lack of resources to provide them access to self-direction – the fasted growing model of support in New York.

Relocate individuals into safe apartments

Relocate individuals into safe apartments. CFS assists 32 individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities in a Housing Subsidy Program. The individuals receive a stipend for rent and a one-time start up stipend. However, after time, many individuals’ situations end up being unsafe, unsanitary, and unstable. Funding for this initiative will help relocate those in unsavory situations so they can enjoy more stable lives, with as much independence as possible.

Make possible trauma-informed care trainings

Make possible trauma-informed care trainings. Trauma-informed care recognizes and responds to the signs, symptoms, and risks of trauma to better address the needs of those who have experienced abuse and toxic stress. CFS would like to train our over 1,000 team members in trauma awareness, so they are better equipped to support those with intellectual and developmental disabilities suffering from the ramifications of trauma.

Equip our pre-vocational and supportive employment

Equip our pre-vocational and supportive employment teams with additional staff and access to community partners and videos to provide additional support.

Many of CFS’ residential, community, and day programs are funded through Medicaid. However, government reimbursements are not enough for CFS to live up to our mission and sustain providing person-centered support to each individual in our programs.

With your giving, CFS is able to provide comprehensive support to over 1,000 individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) across New York and New Jersey. For over 70 years, CFS has been a leading innovator in person-centered support for some of the most vulnerable people in our community – individuals turned away from other agencies due to their high level of need or abandoned by their families and left to the foster care system as disabled children.

CFS’ donors ensure that the individuals we work with receive the support they need to pursue their own unique dreams and live the lives they aspire to live.

Contributions to the CFS Foundation make possible innovative programs and expanded individual support that encourage self-advocacy, independence, and community integration.
