Miguelina’s Story
For most of my life, I struggled to figure out what my purpose was or what I was truly good at. I tried piano, singing, dancing, and painting, but nothing ever felt like the right fit. Like many children, I dreamed of becoming an architect or a ballet dancer, but as I grew older, those dreams faded and I found myself without a clear direction.
When I first came to the United States, I struggled with English and was afraid to speak. My ESL teacher, Ms. Diaz, believed in me, stayed after school to help me, and celebrated every success along the way. She taught me that one person’s encouragement can change someone’s life.
Later, I worked as a medical assistant, but I still wasn’t sure where I belonged.
Then I found CFS.
What was supposed to be a temporary stop while I got back on my feet became the place where I finally found purpose.
Like many people, I questioned my decision at first. Everything was new and overwhelming. But as I got to know my coworkers, supervisors, and the individuals we support, I realized this wasn’t just another workplace, it was a community. Before long, the people around me became my team, my support system, and, in many ways, like family.
The individuals we support inspire me every day. Every Wednesday they arrive at their job program with smiles, excitement, and energy that brighten my day. They never let their disabilities define them. Instead, they remind me to appreciate and celebrate every accomplishment and never underestimate the strength of the human spirit.
One person who had a profound impact on me was Craig Joseph. I’ll never forget the day we were stuck in an elevator for nearly twenty minutes. I was scared, but Craig calmly held my hand and said, “Lina, everything is going to be okay. I’m here.” Even though I was there to support him, he ended up supporting me!
The support I found at CFS extended far beyond my work. When my sister was battling cancer, my coworkers prayed with me every Thursday. Thankfully, she has now been cancer-free for several years.
When my father passed away, that same kindness surrounded me again. My supervisor helped find a pastor to pray at his wake, a close friend spoke at his funeral, and my coworkers stood beside me during one of the hardest times of my life. Their presence reminded me that I wasn’t alone.
Looking back, I realize I came to CFS hoping to make a difference in someone else’s life. What I didn’t expect was how much this community would change mine.
Today, CFS is much more than a job. It is where I found confidence, belonging, and the sense of purpose I had been searching for all along. I hope that through my work and the way I treat others, I can make a positive difference in someone’s life, just as so many people here have made in mine.
