As part of a national campaign to urge people with all disabilities to speak out for themselves through the power of the vote, the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) and other advocacy organizations have launched its campaign. A major part of this effort is , July 17–21, 2017, established in 2015, as part of the 25 anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). (The anniversary of ADA is July 26.) The aim is to “…advocate for policies that allow people with disabilities to fully participate in the political process, including ensuring the accessibility of poling locations and through the promoting the availability of accessible voting technology.”
A Father and Daughter Focus On Caring
Harlem, NY - Fathers and daughters often share a very special bond. It’s a story that repeats itself time and again: they can share a love of sports, of cooking, of hobbies and more. So how very special to share a love of profession and get to work together, as do Jose Aponte and his daughter Annette Aponte, at The Center for Family Support.
Both Jose and Annette work for The Center for family Support, a non-profit in the NY and NJ metropolitan area, that assists individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to live the lives they envision for themselves. Jose is a maintenance supervisor for all residential sites in the five Boroughs and his daughter Annette is employed as a Medical Coordinator for the Underhill residence ion the Bronx.
Jose felt a calling to come to CFS 12 years ago. He had always loved helping people in need and worked for Volunteers of America for 7 years prior to joining CFS. He admires the Center’s mission to bring a better quality of life to clients by not only helping them to become as independent as possible but also to become productive members of the community.
With a nurturing and generous heart, Annette shares her father’s passion of helping others. About 10 years ago, she was offered the opportunity to work at CFS, just like her dad, and jumped at the chance. As a Direct Support Professional, she is able to directly influence, for the better, the lives of others. Like her father, she has made a career out of her passion.
“Helping my clients achieve the goals they have set for themselves so that they can look forward to a better tomorrow and be proud of the person they are is the motivation that keeps me coming back day after day,” said Annette. “By nature, I am an effective advocate and have brought this skill to CFS to help my individuals. I love my “ladies” and feel responsible for their success in life,” said Annette.
Not surprisingly, her dad echoes those sentiments. “The smiles I get from the clients I have helped, along with the laughter shared with coworkers as we work to resolve issues brings happiness to me on a daily basis,” said Jose.
“I think that is what life is all about; finding joy in the little things. Only it’s better when you get to share those little things with someone as special as your daughter,” said Jose.
